Hiatal hernia: diagnostic and therapeutic approach

Hiatal hernia is a common condition of the digestive system characterized by displacement stomach into chest through esophageal hiatus diaphragm. As research progresses and more scientific evidence accumulates, continued advances in surgical approach to hiatal are expected occur. This will allow for better understanding disease’s pathophysiology development new techniques approaches that further improve long-term outcomes quality life patients with hernia.

Barium esophagograms of 89 patients out of 110 with manometrically proven achalasia were reviewed. Only four (4.4%) patients showed association of hiatal hernia, indicative of its rare occurrence.
